Bafana Republic and Other Satires Sketch Challenge

Winners of STAND Foundation Bafana Republic and Other Satires Sketch Challenge announced

STAND Foundation, in association with MVG Productions and Lunchbox Theatre, hosted a sketch challenge based on the Wits University Press publication of Bafana Republic and Other Satires, a compilation of sketches from satirical revues written by Mike van Graan.

Young actors aged 18-35 were invited to select a sketch, to perform and to film it for submission to the competition.

The three judges appointed to evaluate the entries were director and performer, Sylvaine Strike; Jefferson Tshabalala, the 2020 Standard Bank Young Artist for Drama and Rob van Vuuren, who directed three of the revues whose sketches are included in the publication.

They were unanimous in their selection of the top three winners who are Tafara Nyatsanza (performing Chardonnay) and winner of R5000 Lauren Snyders who wins R4000 for her Car Guard performance and Ncumisa Ndimeni who wins R3000 for her portrayal of Chardonnay.

Chardonnay is a sketch from the first Bafana Republic revue, which featured Lindiwe Matshikiza, while Daniel Richards performed Car Guard in Land Acts.

Bafana Republic and Other Satires, available at Exclusive Books and from Wits University Press, provides ideal material for acting exercises and is an ideal reference for drama teachers.
