Mud, Mountains & Magic: The Story Behind Our 2025 Lunchbox Legends Ride

Mar 26, 2026

We know the work we do is deeply impactful on many levels, but we were still blown away when over 300 people decided to donate over R300 000 to our NPO through our 2025 Lunchbox Legends Campaign. Numbers like that make you stop and ask: what moves people to give? So we did what any curious organisation would do — we asked them. What came back was humbling.

“Lunchbox is tapping a society’s positive potential through its children. It is a force for good.” — Robyn and Matthew Brouckaert

“You give young people confidence, great opportunity and most importantly a sense of possibility and belief that they are seen, count and have a future.” — Ian Hunter, Hunter Hotels Foundation

“The youth in our community deserve our support. I feel good about supporting Lunchbox Theatre, because this is precisely what they do.” — Patrick Davies

“We admire your creative work with older children, teaching them skills and then taking them into rural communities and sharing their talent.” — Diarmuid Baigrie

30 Riders. 2 Days. 2000m of Elevation. One Epic Cause.

Last October, 30 fearless cyclists descended on the breathtaking Klein Karoo region of De Rust, ready to take on whatever the South African weather could throw at them, and it threw plenty! Rain, shine, and everything in between, they pedalled through it all with grit, good humour, and a whole lot of heart.

The peloton was mostly made up of familiar faces from Plettenberg Bay, joined by a few from Cape Town, and we were especially thrilled to welcome 5 riders all the way from Belgium who made the trip to ride for Lunchbox. What an incredible show of international support!

Covering over 100km and 2000m of climbing across two stunning routes, riders cycled through the Kammanassie Blue Nature Reserve on day one, before venturing out into the foothills of the majestic Swartberg Mountains for day two. After all that, tired legs were well rewarded, the stunning De Rustica Olive Estate provided a beautiful and comfortable base to rest, recover, and relive the day’s adventures.

The weekend then ended on a truly special note when riders experienced a Lunchbox Theatre performance at a local school, a powerful reminder of exactly who and what they had been riding for.

It was our 8th Lunchbox Legends Ride, and by all accounts, one of the best yet.

Why a Cycle Tour?

Like all NPOs, Lunchbox Theatre relies almost entirely on fundraising and donations to sustain our programmes and reach the thousands of children we serve each year. We’re always looking for new and creative ways to do that, and the Legends Ride was born from a desire to create something more immersive than a standard charity event. Over the years, we’ve ridden through Nieu Bethesda, McGregor, Willowmore, Rietbron, and beyond. Each year, a new adventure. Each year, the same extraordinary purpose.
