Woza Albert! Captivates Local Audiences

This August, Lunchbox Theatre had the honour of presenting Woza Albert!, the internationally acclaimed South African theatre classic, brought to life by Ndlondlo Productions in partnership with DALRO. Starring celebrated actors Hamilton Dhlamini and Thulani Mtsweni, this powerful revival was an energising experience for all who attended.
We hosted three performances at Oakhill School in Knysna, The Harth @ Bocca Dolce in Plettenberg Bay, and Murray High School in Kwanokuthula, welcoming 230 audience members in total. We extend heartfelt thanks to every attendee, as well as to the venues whose support made these performances possible.
Beyond the excitement of the evening, Woza Albert! reaffirmed why theatre matters. As highlighted in Theatre as a Reflection of Social Change, theatre is never just entertainment, it is a mirror to society.
Through live performance, we are invited to reflect on our shared histories, recognise injustices, and imagine a world not simply as it is, but as it could be.
This message resonates deeply within the South African context. During apartheid, storytelling and performance became powerful tools of resistance, and when Woza Albert! premiered in 1981, it played a pivotal role in confronting social injustice. Decades later, its themes: equality, dignity, and the strength of community, remain profoundly relevant.
At its heart, theatre nurtures empathy. When people gather in a shared space to witness a story, barriers fall, conversations spark, and new ideas take root. Community-based theatre is vital because it offers these transformative experiences right here at home.
We are grateful to everyone who joined us for this unforgettable production. May it be the first of many opportunities for our community to engage with bold, inspiring works and to celebrate the essential role theatre continues to play in our society.
